Axie Infinity (AXS), a Play-to-Earn (P2E) blockchain game, has entirely eliminated the token incentives from its traditional game mode in an effort to draw players to a new game mode called Axie Infinity Origin. As of Friday, it will no longer be possible to create Smooth Love Potions (SLPs) in the game's classic mode. Developers say there will be a transfer of SLP prizes to the new game mode. While the team undergoes a monitoring phase to look for bugs, abuses, and exploits, minting won't be available for 30 days.

The development team also emphasized how switching from the old game mode to the new one will "balance the SLP economy." The team will also allow using SLP to construct other in-game bonuses like runes and charms in the new mode, besides eliminating the traditional awards, to add utility to SLP.

In February, the Axie Infinity team withdrew SLP prizes for the adventure mini-game and daily tasks in traditional mode to stabilize the SLP token's economy. The AXS token was still down 98.7% from its all-time high of $0.39 in July 2021, despite the team's efforts to make economic improvements.

The P2E model gained popularity in 2021 thanks to the non-fungible token (NFT) game, which accounted for approximately two-thirds of all NFT transactions in blockchain games. The project displayed NFT exchanges worth $3.5 billion during the previous year, according to the token information website NonFungible.

The NFT transaction volume for the Axie Infinity project increased 205% in July, even though its crypto tokens underperformed during the crypto winter. The project is "healing," according to its co-founder Jeff Zirlin, alluding to the favorable feedback for the game's NFT land staking feature.
