On Tuesday, OpenSea posted on Twitter that on September 13th, David Bowie's enduring influence will touch yet another new frontier as nine of the world's greatest crypto-artists gather together to honor his heritage and put #BowieOnTheBlockchain.
Ryan Foutty, vice president of business development at OpenSea, said in a statement that this remarkable collection ties together some of the most innovative NFT artists with Bowie relics to bring a new set of fans together in Web3.
NFTs are distinct blockchain tokens representing ownership of a specific item, generally digital art. However, a handful of pop culture NFT versions, such as the 'Stranger Things' NFTs from Netflix earlier this summer, have upset some fans who are not supporters of the technology.
According to the reports, social media users are unhappy with the renowned star's likeness connection to the blockchain tokens. A few people supported NFT technology, while others warned the Bowie estate against its use.
One of the opponents of Bowie is filmmaker Duncan Jones, Bowie's son, who has called NFTs a "fad." Jones had previously referred to the Christie's auction, when the NFT sold for an incredible $69.3 million, as "suspicious."
Despite the skeptics, creatives like 19-year-old Fewocious are happy to be creating NFT art for charity in the Bowie style.
