Earlier this week, Discord’s founder and CEO, Jason Citron tweeted a screenshot of the app’s user setting page appearing to show a Discord integration with MetaMask and WalletConnect.
The tweet for Discord's future plans received backlash from users, many of whom threatened to cancel their paid subscriptions, requesting Citron to abandon the idea due to many of the negative conceptions that surround the cryptocurrency community.
"I kindly request that you do not engage in the NFT scene. I want an app that does not enable a money laundering scheme that is also proven to contribute to climate change. The last thing that I want as a user of your product is to hurt the environment, which I care about deeply," a user replied to the CEO's post.
Meanwhile, on the Discord subreddit, a post urging Discord developers not to support NFTs gained widespread support. At the same time, a popular thread on Discord's own support forum also urged the company to "please for the love of god stay away from the NFT trashfire."
Just two days after his initial tweet, Citron announced the cancellation of plans for NFT integration.
Many of the critics pointed to the outsized environmental impact of NFTs as central to their opposition toward Discord's potential plan for NFT and crypto integration. Others pointed to widespread scams in the industry.
Discord has long been used by crypto and NFT enthusiasts as a platform to forge strong communities around various projects. However, it has also been used by cybercriminals as a way to deliver malware links to unsuspecting victims that are either connected to crypto mining programs or steal their private keys.
