Flexa announced the partnership on Wednesday which will enable the fast-food chain to accept all the 98 cryptocurrencies which Flexa currently supports including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE) and seven U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins like USD Coin (USDC).
Even Dogecoin influencer Matt Wallace tweeted that the meme-based cryptocurrency is now acceptable in the fast food store.
Chipotle has briefly experimented with cryptocurrencies in the past. In April 2021 to celebrate National Burrito Day, it gave away $100,000 worth of Bitcoin along with free burritos and claimed it was the first U.S. restaurant brand to offer a crypto giveaway. Chipotle even caught the metaverse hype early when it set up a virtual restaurant on Roblox for Halloween last year. In the test, the first 100,000 users received free burritos online that could be exchanged for physical products from physical stores.
With the news, Chipotle joins a long list of restaurants that currently accept cryptocurrency. Subway, one of the first to accept Bitcoin in stores, started as early as 2013. Similarly, Pizza Hut in Venezuela also began accepting crypto back in 2020. Recently, Starbucks allowed its reward members to turn cryptocurrencies cash balances on the Starbucks app, using a third-party app.
