Russia had allegedly meddled in elections including the 2016 Brexit in the U.K. and the 2016 presidential vote in the U.S.
The amendments were proposed by minister Darragh O’Brien as a measure to protect Ireland’s democratic system “given the escalating threat of cyber warfare targeting free countries” as well as to reform political funding laws to prevent foreign interference in how parties or individuals are funded.
“The appalling invasion of Ukraine and insidious disinformation war highlight the ongoing fundamental threats faced by all democracies,” O’Brien commented.
Ireland is now among many other jurisdictions that have illegalized crypto political donations. California banned such actions in 2018, citing transparency issues with digital assets. Other US states with similar laws include Oregon, Michigan, and North Carolina.
