Marvel Producer Avi Arad to Turn Huxley Ethereum NFT Comics Into Film

Another prominent NFT initiative is about to make the leap from the blockchain to the big screen, as the NFT-to-movie pipeline is ramping up. Arad Productions, a Marvel film producer, announced intentions to adapt artist Ben Mauro's Ethereum NFT comic book project Huxley into a feature film yesterday.

Huxley is a science-fiction story told in six digital issues that may be purchased as Ethereum NFTs. To make the film, Arad Productions has paired up with Web3-focused production studio Feature, and has enlisted Academy Award-nominated VFX supervisor Jerome Chen—a co-founder of Sony Pictures Imageworks—to assist in bringing Mauro's vision to a new platform.

Huxley's first teaser video uses CG animation to depict the comic world's post-apocalyptic reality. However, because it's classified as a "cinematic trailer," it's possible that it's only creating the tone for the project rather than revealing the final product.

The Huxley film has yet to be given a release date. According to a press statement, the partners hope to provide interactive, Huxley-themed metaverse experiences later this year "on the way" to releasing the film.

Images, video files, and digital comic books can all be represented by an NFT, which operates like a blockchain-backed receipt for a digital object. According to DappRadar, the market grew to $25 billion in trading volume in 2021.

In October, the first NFT issue of Huxley was produced, with 10,000 digital issues sold at a mint price of 0.10 ETH (about $390 at the time). Since then, a second issue has been released, with four more on the way. Secondary sales of the two issues have so far earned approximately 1,920 ETH, or about $4.9 million at today's rate, according to OpenSea.

In March 2021, Mauro, a concept artist who has worked on films such as "Elysium" and "The Hobbit," as well as the Halo and Call of Duty gaming series, unveiled his first NFTs. His debut release on the Flow blockchain, Evolution, made over $2 million in sales.

Arad is a co-founder of Marvel Studios and has worked on a number of Marvel comic adaptations, including "Iron Man," "X-Men," and "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," among others. He's also worked on several film adaptations, including the recently released "Uncharted."

Micah Johnson's Aku, a young Black astronaut, was the first original NFT IP optioned for a cinematic adaptation last year.
