According to trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, Mastercard filed 15 trademark applications to register Mastercard, its “Circles” logo, and the “Priceless” slogan. Using this, MasterCard aims to push its services to enable seamless transactions throughout the virtual world.
Among the 15 trademark filings, one includes artwork, text, audio, and video that are authenticated by NFTs, while another shows processing card transactions for goods and services in the metaverse and other virtual worlds.
Similarly, another patent adds the Mastercard names to events, performances, and online communities in the fields of digital assets, metaverse, and NFTs in the virtual world.
Last month American Express hinted at its Metaverse entry through similar trademark filings. Reportedly, the company filed trademark applications for its logos and items including the Centurion black card and “Shop Small” program to enable the usage of its services in the metaverse.
In 2020, Visa filed a patent application to create a digital currency and is developing a native digital currency on its card networks.
NFT related trademark applications have already exceeded last year’s filings. In 2021, only 1965 applications were filed while in 2022 over 2000 applications have already been filed.
