The co-founder and CEO of Sorare, Nicholas Julia, expressed excitement about the collaboration. Highlighting the popularity of basketball and Sorare's goal to use this cooperation to bring fans closer to their favorite teams and players.
The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the players' organization for the American basketball league, and the Paris-based business jointly announced a multi-year collaboration on their websites. The NBA designates Sorare as its "Official NFT Fantasy Partner."
Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, said,
"Our partnership with Sorare will give NBA fans an entirely new way to engage with our teams and players. With Sorare's emerging NFT fantasy platform, we see significant opportunities to broaden our community of fans and grow NBA basketball around the world."
Users will create a team of NFT-based collectibles portraying NBA superstars who score points depending on their actual performances in the fantasy game. The game will be out in October, just in time for the 2022-23 campaign.
The NBA joins Major League Baseball (MLB) as the most recent prominent sports league to collaborate with Sorare. Last year, Sorare's NFT skills were used by La Liga, the Spanish version of La Liga, and the Bundesliga, Germany's premier soccer league.
With licenses from teams and leagues, Sorare, a developer of NFT-based sports games, claims to have 2 million users signed up across 185 countries.
Individuals can purchase game highlights on the Flow blockchain through Top Shot, a digital collectibles network. The NBA has already built a strong presence in the digital assets world. In May, Top Shot sales exceeded $1 billion.
