Speaking during an interview with CNN’s State of the Union, Adams described cryptocurrency as “a new way of paying for goods and services throughout the entire globe.”
As part of a plan to make New York City a capital city of cryptocurrency, he said that Bitcoin must be taught in schools, as the sector becomes a “new way of paying for goods and services throughout the entire globe” and urged local schools to equip students for “the new way of thinking” brought about by blockchain technology and digital assets.
He further expressed that many young people in the city are unfamiliar with blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies and hence incorporating these into this educational system would help educate the youngest regarding the new era of digitization.
“When I talked about blockchain and Bitcoins, young people on the street stopped and asked me, ‘What is that?’”
He also revealed plans to encourage New York businesses to accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment, saying he would “tread carefully” and “get it right” while adding that New York must remain a “center of innovation, no matter what that innovation is.”
Just last week, the NYC mayor-elect announced that once he took office in January, he would take his first three paychecks in bitcoin. The incoming mayor’s policy platform includes transforming the city into the United States’ crypto hub. He is also considering launching a New York-specific cryptocurrency similar to MiamiCoin.
New York wouldn’t be the first city in the U.S. to implement a study program that includes crypto. In March, The Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill calling for state education officials to implement a financial literacy program including crypto in high schools.
