Solana Purportedly Targeted by a DDoS Assault - Network Still Operational

Solana DDoS Assault
The Solana blockchain was subjected to yet another DDoS assault, which briefly blocked the network but allowed it to stay operational. A distributed denial of service (DDoS) assault was purportedly launched on Solana's blockchain during the last 24 hours, although the network remained operational.

A DDoS Assault on Solana Blockchain

A DDoS attack is when a botnet or many coordinated devices flood a network with bogus traffic to knock it down. This isn't the first time Solana has had a network outage; in September, a news portal reported that the network was down for 17 hours owing to significant botting activity for an initial DEX offering (IDO) on Solana-based DEX platform Raydium.

Blockasset, a Solana-based NFT platform, revealed the latest DDoS assault on December 9 at 3 p.m. UTC, after noting that: "We are aware that token distribution takes a long time. DDoS assaults have jammed the network and caused delays in the Solana chain."

GenesysGo, a Solana-based infrastructure provider, also reported on the issue, noting that the validator network had trouble processing transaction requests but that the problem was due to "growing pains." The nature of the problem is unknown since the Solana Foundation has yet to disclose any assaults. Solana states that the network is fully working at the time of writing.

However, many Twitter accounts claimed that Solana was down globally, with Verbit CEO Roy Murphy (and BSV supporter) declaring that "Solana collapsed again and is now unavailable." Engineers are investigating the possibility of rebooting the system.' You can't possibly make this stuff up!"

Blaming the Network Congestion

Earlier today, members of the r/Solana subreddit blamed the network congestion on another Raydium IDO launch, with user "u/Psilodelic" publishing a post headlined "Why do Raydium IDOs clog the Solana network and what is being done about it?"

"Right now, my main worry with Solana is the performance effect during high-volume activities associated with Raydium IDOs and launches." Every single performance problem in the last six months, including the 17-hour outage, has been caused by a Raydium launch," they said. One of the group's moderators Laine Sa was not able to clarify whether the Solana Network's issues were because of Raydim, but did highlight that there had been "stop gaps" to keep Solana up from DDoS attacks since September.
