The project will employ the pair's CryptoPunks in its visual graphics, according to a news release, and will be a unique audio-visual IRL-meets-metaverse ensemble. The group asserts to be the first DJ set affiliated with CryptoPunks, which distributed intellectual property (IP) to owners in August following its acquisition by Yuga Labs.
Steve Aoki owns six of the 8-bit figures, including CryptoPunk #6748, who dons an eye mask and a purple hat, while 3LAU owns CryptoPunk #6708, a character with white hair and sunglasses.
In a release, Aoki stated that PUNX is an innovative, conceptual musical art project with a reference to the music people love and the music that inspires. Despite having been friends for ten years, this collaboration was motivated by the mutual love of Web3.
According to the group's tweet, PUNX will sound musically different from any of the existing sounds, choosing a glitchier, bumpier technological vibe.
The initiative is not an NFT, according to a tweet from 3LAU, although it could eventually figure out how to include blockchain technology. The band intends to travel and release songs in 2023.
Through their projects, Aoki and Blau had a big impact on the fusion of NFTs and music. In May 2021, Blau introduced the music royalty network Royal after releasing the Ultraviolet NFT album series, which brought in a record-breaking $11 million. Aoki established the A0K1VERSE, an NFT membership community, and produced numerous popular NFT collections, such as the Dream Catcher.
