Steven Nerayoff, a former Ethereum adviser, has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the law firm Covington &amp; Burling, claiming they mishandled his defense in a 2019 extortion case. Filed in the New York County Supreme Court, Nerayoff alleges that his lawyer, Alan Vinegrad, advised him not to submit key evidence, including videos and messages, to U.S. prosecutors. These materials, Nerayoff asserts, would have proven his actions were lawful.

Nerayoff and his colleague Michael Hlady were arrested in 2019 for allegedly extorting a cryptocurrency startup. However, after Nerayoff handed over the evidence in June 2022, the charges were dismissed in May 2023. He contends that had his legal team submitted the exculpatory evidence earlier, the case would have been resolved much sooner.

A spokesperson for Covington has denied the claims, stating that the lawsuit "lacks merit" and that the firm will defend itself vigorously. According to Nerayoff, Covington withdrew from representing him after his indictment in January 2020, leaving him to spend over $1 million in legal fees over three years.
<h2>Additional Legal Battles</h2>
In addition to this lawsuit, Nerayoff is pursuing several other legal actions. He filed a $9.6 billion lawsuit against the U.S. government, alleging malicious prosecution in the extortion case. In July 2023, he also launched a $10 million defamation lawsuit against social media user “Boring Sleuth” for alleged defamatory statements made online.
