Telefonica Putting 8,000 Companies Through Blockchain Piloting

Telefonica
Telefonica announced that it is in cahoots with the Association of Science and Technology Parks (APTE) in Spain to carry out trials on the emerging technology. Telefonica's proposed partnership with APTE will give 8,000 companies from Spain a kick at the cat to access their Blockchain network. The telco will resort to Hyperledger-based blockchain nodes at APTE's 52 sites, ingress to a secure, decentralised Blockchain network.

During the three-month Dummy run, companies will be invited to develop their applications for the use of their blockchain network, as well a platform to experiment with their own token. Telefonica's 'Cloud Garden' service will conduct the trials. Telefonica, along with IBM conspired for this service in April last year. The impetus of it was to simplify companies adoption of emerging technologies, which includes Blockchain, as well as Al and big data.

"Companies housed in these scientific and technological parks will be able to benefit from the advantages of blockchain technology without having to face the inherent complexity of it, or have to dedicate resources to acquire the knowledge necessary to make the most of it," said Maria Jesus Almazor, CEO of Telefonica Spain.

Telefonica Turning the Table

The move comes as another step in the right direction from Telefonica, towards an archetypal digital service provider. The company stated in November that it'd turn its attention towards Latin America again in their bid to make business more elegant and agile for customers in Europe. Blockchain tops the priority list in this strategy.

Blockchain is witnessing a massive adoption by a plethora of industries, especially in the loT field, where 75% of loT technology adopters in the US already use Blockchain or are planning to launch it 2020. Bitcoin is receiving increased and instant attention from a multitude of Telcos, with Deutsche Telekom notably starting Europe's first Blockchain as a Service marketplace via their subsidiary company, T-Systems late last year.
