Users looking to receive tips in Ether (ETH) simply need to enable the platform's tipping option and add an Ethereum address to the dedicated section of their profile. The latest tip feature, however, doesn't support ENS addresses, but the usual alphanumeric one.
“Like Twitter, digital currencies operate without global barriers. We’re excited to incorporate Ethereum in addition to Bitcoin payment in Tips, enabling more people to participate in the digital economy with as little friction as possible,” a Twitter spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Besides Ethereum, the expansion also supports a slew of payment services including Paga, Paytm and Barter by Flutterwave.
In September 2021, the platform introduced Bitcoin tipping over the lightning network, allowing users to connect their lightning addresses to their accounts.
The latest development comes just months after former CEO Jack Dorsey's departure from the social media company. Dorsey, a Bitcoin maximalist, has previously shown distaste for cryptocurrencies besides BTC including Ethereum, which he’s suggested is “centralized” and driven by “corporate-controlled lies”.
Since Dorsey’s absence, Twitter has embarked on various other Ethereum related projects. For instance, the company launched a crypto team in November for developing decentralized applications (dapps). The social media site also granted users of its subscription service, Blue, the ability to verify non-fungible token (NFT) profile pictures last month.
