Ubisoft is Making Its Own Blockchain Play to Earn Games

Ubisoft games blockchain
One of the world’s largest video game companies, Ubisoft has revealed its foray into blockchain technologies like cryptocurrency and NFTs, according to its latest Q2 report. The company is also funding blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands, which advertises itself on its website as "the global leader in branded blockchain gaming."

Ubisoft Will Create and Invest in Blockchain Games

According to its recent earnings report, Ubisoft wants to start making play-to-earn video games and is funding blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands, which claims itself as "the global leader in branded blockchain gaming."

Currently, Animoca Brands has racing games like Revv Motorsport, Revv Racing, and Formula E which uses the REVV token allowing players to purchase in-game items, which they can own as NFTs. It also has a game called The Sandbox, a virtual world full of NFTs called "Sand."

In addition to its funding of Animoca, Ubisoft is a founding member of the Blockchain Game Alliance and has been exploring the technology generally since its early development.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that Ubisoft both wanted to invest in companies working with the blockchain while also creating its own games while CFO Frédérick Duguet, stated:

‘Blockchain will enable more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot. We’ve been working with lots of small companies going on blockchain and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry, and we want to be one of the key players here.’

The Future of Blockchain Gaming

Ubisoft isn't the only gaming publisher considering making games tied to the blockchain. For instance, Electronic Arts began hiring for positions with experience in the blockchain and NFTs.  In the meantime, PlayStation filed a patent for using Bitcoin to make bets at the beginning of the year.

At the same time, gaming giant Valve recently announced banning all crypto, blockchain, and nonfungible token (NFT) games and content from its Steam marketplace, stating its belief that the assets have no intrinsic value.
